Specific Energy Demand (SED) Breakdown for side-stream MBR

The immersed membrane in the case given above can be replaced with side-stream membrane. No scouring air and mixed liquor recycle between aeration tank and membrane tank are required. Instead mixed liquor must be recycled through side-stream membrane, i.e. typically tubular membrane, at relatively high pressure.

   As shown below, vast majority of energy consumption tanks place to run side-stream membrane although permeate recovery is assumed optimistically at 5 %. Overall SED is calculated at 6.0kWh/m3, which is an order of magnitude greater than that for immersed MBR (0.70kWh/m3 as shown here)
